The main reason for the chlorine generator is the plumbing code in some Europe countries state that the softener must generate some chlorine in the softener system to disinfect it.  The code does not really say how much or how long.

Chlorine will be bad for the resin but it can withstand some chlorine and the amount from the generator is not too much.  But overall, it would hurt the resin but we don't really know how much.
